Common Ground Spirits November Blog 2023

We’re counting our blessings this month and so grateful you are here!

If you sign up for our quarterly newsletter before the end of the year, we’ll offer you an exclusive holiday discount—FREE SHIPPING for orders of two or more bottles! Trust us, you’ll want to stock up on gin for this Common Ground twist on a hot toddy.

Hot toddies are typically made with dark spirits like whiskey and rum, but magical things happen when the botanicals in our gin open up under the application of a little hot water. This cozy cocktail comes together in a matter of minutes and offers plenty of chilly evening comfort with just a whisper of summer herbs. And while we don’t want to make any health claims here, the combination of hot water, soothing honey, cinnamon, gin, and lemon juice certainly feels healthy—just the thing to thaw your bones and open your sinuses after a long wintery day.

Hot Gin Toddy

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 ½ oz Common Ground Spirits Gin Recipe 01 (elderflower and basil)

¾ oz lemon juice, strained

1 tsp honey

2 oz hot water

Cinnamon stick & lemon peel for garnish

Instructions

  1. Bring a small saucepan or kettle of water to a simmer.
  2. In a mug, snifter, or rocks glass, combine the honey and lemon juice. We like using a mug because it retains heat better than a cocktail glass, but choose your own adventure!
  3. Add hot water to the honey-lemon mixture and stir until the honey is dissolved.
  4. Add the gin to the honey mixture and stir with the cinnamon stick.
  5. Twist the lemon peel over the hot cocktail to disperse some of the lemon oil, place twisted lemon peel on the rim, and serve.

Toddy Tips

  1. If this recipe is too strong for your liking, don’t be afraid to dilute it with hot water! Try adding water in ½-ounce increments until the dilution is just where you like it.
  2. Try swapping the cinnamon stick out for a sprig of rosemary or thyme for a more botanical infusion.
  3. Don’t be afraid to reheat! A lukewarm or—heaven forbid—cold toddy just isn’t the same. If your cocktail gets cold, just remove the garnishes and pop the mug in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
